MOGADISHU — Somalia’s National University on Wednesday launched a new Artificial Intelligence Center aimed at advancing research, innovation and skills development in one of the country’s most ambitious technology initiatives to date.

The Somali National University Artificial Intelligence Center (SNAIC) was officially inaugurated in Mogadishu during a ceremony attended by government officials, university representatives, academics, technology experts and other stakeholders.

University officials said the center will serve as a leading hub for AI research and development, supporting the creation of locally tailored technological solutions to accelerate national development and digital transformation efforts.

The institution is expected to focus on strengthening scientific research, developing Somali expertise in emerging technologies, fostering innovation, and contributing to the formulation of policies and governance frameworks for the responsible use of artificial intelligence.

According to the university, the center will promote collaboration between academia, government institutions and industry partners to ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed in ways that support the country’s social and economic priorities.

Research activities will cover a broad range of fields, including machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, robotics and AI ethics. The center also aims to encourage the application of AI in key sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, public administration and economic development.

In addition to research, SNAIC will offer academic programs, professional training courses, innovation initiatives and research projects designed to equip students, researchers and professionals with the skills needed to participate in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.

The launch comes as countries across Africa increasingly invest in artificial intelligence and digital technologies to enhance productivity, improve public services and strengthen economic competitiveness.
