Somalia Welcomes U.S.–Iran Understanding, Urges Sustained Diplomatic Engagement

MOGADISHU — The Federal Government of Somalia on Tuesday welcomed a recent understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a “positive and constructive development” that could help reduce long-standing regional tensions and strengthen prospects for peace in the Middle East and beyond.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mogadishu said it “strongly supports all diplomatic initiatives” aimed at de-escalation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution of disputes, stressing that military confrontation would only deepen instability across already fragile regions.

Somalia emphasized that sustained engagement between Washington and Tehran could contribute to improved regional security architecture, particularly in areas affected by geopolitical rivalries, proxy conflicts, and maritime insecurity.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia reaffirms its firm belief that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path toward durable peace and stability,” the ministry said, adding that the country “encourages all parties to continue engaging constructively in good faith.”

The statement highlighted Somalia’s concern over the wider implications of tensions in the Middle East, noting that instability in the region often has direct economic and security repercussions for Africa, particularly through disrupted trade routes, rising energy costs, and increased maritime risks in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean corridors.

Mogadishu also praised what it described as “sustained diplomatic efforts” by several regional and international actors, including Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, for facilitating communication channels and encouraging dialogue between the parties.

The government further acknowledged the role of U.S. President Donald J. Trump and other international stakeholders, saying their involvement demonstrated “the importance of political leadership in preventing escalation and promoting peaceful solutions.”

Somalia expressed hope that the understanding between Washington and Tehran would evolve into a more comprehensive diplomatic framework addressing broader regional security concerns, including freedom of navigation, protection of civilians, and cooperation on counterterrorism and economic stability.

It reiterated Somalia’s commitment to international law, multilateral cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, urging the global community to “intensify support for diplomacy over confrontation” in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region.

The statement comes amid renewed international diplomatic activity aimed at containing tensions between major powers and preventing further destabilisation in key strategic regions, where conflicts have repeatedly raised concerns over global security and economic stability.
