HARGEISA — The Somaliland administration has expressed concern over the recent visit of Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to the northeastern regions, saying the move could contribute to heightened political tensions in the area.
In a statement released following the visit, Somaliland called on the international community to urge the Federal Government of Somalia to avoid actions it described as interference in Somaliland’s internal affairs and efforts that could further increase tensions.
“We call on the international community to encourage the Federal Government of Somalia to refrain from provoking tensions in the region and from undertaking visits that do not serve any meaningful purpose,” the Somaliland administration said.
The Somaliland administration said it remains committed to preserving peace and stability, but accused Mogadishu of taking steps that it believes could undermine existing political arrangements and security efforts in the region.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s visit to the northeast comes amid continued disputes between Somaliland and Somalia over territorial control, governance, and the status of contested areas. Regions including Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn have remained politically sensitive due to competing claims and ongoing developments.
The Federal Government of Somalia rejects Somaliland’s declaration of independence and considers Somaliland part of Somalia. Somaliland, however, maintains that it restored its independence in 1991 and continues to seek international recognition as a sovereign state.
The latest dispute reflects the continuing political tensions between Hargeisa and Mogadishu and highlights the challenges facing efforts to reach a lasting resolution through dialogue and negotiation.
