DUBAI — Reports circulating on social media and regional platforms claiming that the emirate of Sharjah is planning to break away from the United Arab Emirates have sparked speculation across the Gulf, although no official confirmation has been issued by authorities in the UAE.
According to the claims, Sharjah — one of the seven emirates that form the UAE federation — is allegedly considering a move toward greater political autonomy or possible independence, amid accusations that the federal system disproportionately favors Abu Dhabi and Dubai in terms of political influence, economic investment and development.
The reports further allege that unnamed foreign powers are quietly encouraging the initiative as part of broader geopolitical efforts aimed at weakening the UAE’s strategic influence in the Gulf region, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Individuals described in the reports as officials close to Sharjah’s leadership reportedly said discussions surrounding autonomy had existed “for years behind closed doors” and had recently entered what they called a “more serious phase.”
Residents and commentators cited in the claims complain that Sharjah has not received the same level of federal attention, infrastructure investment and international prominence enjoyed by Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s two most economically powerful emirates.
Political analysts say that any serious attempt by one emirate to separate from the federation would represent an unprecedented development in the modern history of the UAE, which was founded in 1971 as a union of seven emirates under a federal political structure.
Experts also note that such a move would likely trigger major political and economic repercussions across the Gulf region, given the UAE’s strategic role in regional trade, energy exports and security cooperation.
However, there is currently no independently verified evidence that Sharjah is pursuing secession, and UAE authorities have not issued any public statement supporting the claims.
