SUDAN: Hamdok-Led Somoud Coalition Seeks Quartet Support Amid Concerns Over Saudi Arabia’s Separate Initiatives

0

KHARTOUM — The Somoud civilian coalition, led by former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, is seeking to strengthen international support for its political efforts to end Sudan’s ongoing conflict, while attempting to prevent differences over Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic initiatives from creating divisions within its ranks.

According to Africa Intelligence, the coalition is working to secure backing from the capitals of the international Quartet, while navigating Saudi Arabia’s separate diplomatic approaches to the Sudanese crisis.

Diplomatic Efforts and Regional Interests

The Quartet has played a role in international diplomatic efforts concerning Sudan. Coordination among its members is significant for initiatives aimed at ending the war, facilitating humanitarian assistance and supporting a political process involving Sudanese civilian actors.

For Somoud, gaining support from the Quartet’s capitals could help strengthen its engagement with international partners as discussions continue over Sudan’s political future.

However, Saudi Arabia’s individual diplomatic initiatives present a potential challenge for maintaining a coordinated approach among the coalition’s international partners. The report suggests that Somoud is seeking to ensure these separate efforts do not generate disagreements or weaken unity within the coalition.

Hamdok and the Search for a Civilian Political Settlement

Abdalla Hamdok, who served as Sudan’s prime minister before the military takeover in October 2021, has been associated with efforts to restore civilian leadership and pursue a negotiated resolution to the country’s political crisis.

Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict has devastated communities, displaced millions of people and created one of the world’s most severe humanitarian emergencies.

The Challenge Ahead

International diplomatic coordination remains an important factor in efforts to end the conflict. However, differences among external actors over mediation, political arrangements and engagement with Sudanese parties could complicate negotiations.

Somoud’s reported diplomatic strategy reflects the challenge facing civilian political groups as they seek international backing while maintaining cohesion and pursuing a peaceful political settlement.
