Sudan Islamic Leader Calls for Probe into Al-Taher Detention

KHARTOUM — Sudanese Islamic leader Naji Mustafa has called for an investigation into the continued detention of Omar al-Farouq al-Taher, who has reportedly been held by Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) authorities without formal charges since April 16, 2026.

Mustafa’s appeal comes amid concerns over whether the detention complies with Sudan’s constitutional and legal protections, with a legal challenge alleging that authorities have exceeded permissible limits on holding individuals without charge.

Supporters of the case are demanding that authorities either present formal charges against Al-Taher or release him, arguing that his rights to due process and judicial review must be respected.

The issue has emerged during Sudan’s ongoing conflict and political crisis, where military arrests, security powers, and civilian protections have become major points of debate.

Mustafa has urged SAF authorities to provide clarity on the reasons behind Al-Taher’s detention and ensure that all security actions follow legal procedures.

The SAF has not publicly commented on the allegations or the request for an investigation.

The case adds to wider concerns over detention practices in Sudan, with rights advocates calling for greater transparency, accountability, and adherence to legal protections during the country’s ongoing instability.
