Sudan Prosecutor Challenges Al Burhan Decision in Supreme Court Appeal

0

KASSALA — A senior Sudanese public prosecutor has filed an unprecedented administrative appeal before the Supreme Court in Kassala, challenging a decision linked to Sudan’s army chief, Abdel Fattah Al Burhan, in a move that could deepen scrutiny over governance and institutional authority amid the country’s ongoing conflict.

The appeal reportedly names Al Burhan as the primary respondent and questions the legality and authenticity of an official government document at the centre of the dispute, according to legal sources familiar with the case.

While full details of the contested decision have not been made public, the filing is being described by observers as highly unusual, given its direct challenge to a senior figure in Sudan’s ruling military establishment.

Journalist Hajar Suleiman said the case represents a “major test of the credibility of Sudan’s state institutions,” noting that it could set an important precedent for how administrative and legal disputes involving top officials are handled.

Legal analysts say the case comes at a sensitive moment for Sudan, where competing authorities and weakened state structures have raised concerns about transparency, accountability, and the rule of law since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023.

The Supreme Court in Kassala has not yet issued a public response regarding the admissibility or timeline of the appeal.
