Djibouti Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Sudan

DJIBOUTI — Djibouti has called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Sudan, urging the country’s warring parties to end hostilities and return to the negotiating table as the conflict continues to destabilize the wider Horn of Africa.

Foreign Minister Abdoulkader Hussein Omar said Djibouti remains ready to support “any credible diplomatic initiative” aimed at launching direct political dialogue between Sudan’s rival military factions, stressing that a negotiated settlement is the only viable path to ending the war.

He warned that the prolonged fighting risks deepening humanitarian suffering, displacing more civilians, and further weakening regional stability. Djibouti reiterated its support for regional and international mediation efforts, including those led by the African Union and regional blocs working to restore peace.

The appeal comes as Sudan’s conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, continues to expand across multiple states, despite repeated calls for ceasefires and peace talks.

Djibouti, a member of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), said it is prepared to play an active role in facilitating dialogue, hosting talks if necessary, and coordinating with partners to push the peace process forward.
