U.S. Reviews Eritrea Sanctions Amid Shifting Horn of Africa Diplomacy

ADDIS ABABA — The United States is reportedly reviewing its sanctions policy on Eritrea as part of a broader reassessment of its diplomatic strategy in the Horn of Africa, according to Ethiopian media reports.

The discussions are said to reflect Washington’s interest in improving relations with Asmara while promoting stability in a region that includes Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, and Somalia.

If confirmed, the move would mark a significant shift in U.S. policy toward Eritrea, which has been subject to sanctions over allegations of human rights abuses, governance concerns, and its historical role in regional conflicts.

Ethiopian media suggest the policy review is linked to growing international efforts to re-engage Eritrea diplomatically, with officials reportedly weighing whether easing sanctions could encourage cooperation on security, trade, and regional integration.

The development comes at a sensitive time for the region. Despite the 2018 peace agreement between Ethiopia and Eritrea that ended decades of hostility, relations between the two countries remain fragile, with lingering mistrust and periodic tensions.

Analysts warn that the Horn of Africa continues to face significant instability, with fears that any renewed confrontation between Addis Ababa and Asmara could have wider regional implications. Ongoing conflicts, armed groups, and unresolved political disputes continue to pose risks to long-term peace.

At the same time, some observers argue that renewed engagement with Eritrea could help reduce its diplomatic isolation and create opportunities for cooperation on migration, Red Sea security, and economic development.

Neither U.S. nor Eritrean officials have publicly confirmed the reported review.

The reported move highlights a broader shift in international policy in the Horn of Africa, as global powers increasingly combine pressure with diplomatic engagement in an effort to promote stability in one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
