MOGADISHU — The United States has welcomed Somalia’s swift response following the circulation of a viral video showing individuals wearing military uniforms allegedly stepping on a U.S. flag.
According to Somalia’s Ministry of Defence, authorities have identified and arrested all individuals suspected of involvement in the incident. The ministry said investigations are ongoing and warned that anyone found responsible for actions that damage the reputation and integrity of the Somali National Army (SNA) will face legal consequences.
The incident sparked widespread discussion on social media and prompted public statements from both the Federal Government of Somalia and the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu.
In its response, the U.S. Embassy welcomed the measures taken by Somali authorities and reaffirmed the importance of the longstanding partnership between the United States and Somalia, particularly in the areas of security, counterterrorism, and institutional development.
Somali officials also reiterated their commitment to maintaining strong bilateral relations with the United States, describing the incident as an isolated act that does not reflect the values or professionalism of the Somali National Army.
The episode highlights the close security cooperation between the two countries, with Washington remaining one of Somalia’s key international partners in efforts to strengthen national security institutions and combat extremist threats.
Investigations into the incident remain ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further action will be taken in accordance with military and national laws.
