CAIRO/MOGADISHU — The foreign ministers of Somalia and Egypt have held high-level talks focused on the political and security situation in Somalia, as well as efforts to deepen strategic cooperation between the two countries.

According to official statements, the meeting brought together Somalia’s Foreign Minister and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, for discussions covering bilateral relations, regional security dynamics, and ongoing stabilization efforts in Somalia.
The talks placed particular emphasis on strengthening diplomatic, economic, and security ties, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation in areas including counterterrorism, capacity-building, and regional coordination.
Egypt reiterated its firm support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, stressing that it rejects any actions that could undermine the country’s independence or stability.
“Egypt stands fully behind the unity and sovereignty of Somalia and opposes any measures that threaten its territorial integrity,” Abdelatty said, according to a statement released after the meeting.
The Somali side welcomed Egypt’s continued political and diplomatic backing, describing it as vital in supporting the country’s ongoing state-building process and efforts to maintain national cohesion.
Discussions also addressed the broader security situation in the Horn of Africa, where Somalia continues to face challenges from militant groups, including Al-Shabaab, which has carried out attacks targeting civilians, government institutions, and international partners.
Both ministers highlighted the importance of enhanced regional cooperation to counter extremist threats, noting that stability in Somalia is closely linked to wider security in East Africa and beyond.
In addition to security issues, the meeting explored opportunities to boost economic ties, including trade, investment, and infrastructure development, as part of a broader push to strengthen long-term bilateral relations.
Egypt also expressed readiness to support Somalia through technical assistance, training programs, and institutional development, particularly in governance and public sector reform.
Analysts say Egypt has in recent years increased its diplomatic engagement in the Horn of Africa, viewing Somalia as a key partner in promoting regional stability and safeguarding strategic interests.
The latest talks are seen as part of a growing effort by both countries to formalize a long-term strategic partnership, amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the region.
Officials from both sides agreed to maintain regular consultations and to translate their commitments into concrete initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation and supporting peace and stability in Somalia.
