BRUSSELS — The European Union has ruled out acting as a mediator in any future peace talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, European Council President António Costa said on Friday.
Costa said the EU remains politically aligned with Kyiv and therefore does not intend to take a neutral brokering role in potential negotiations with Russia.
He added that the bloc’s current position reflects continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its resistance against Russia’s ongoing military campaign.
The comments come amid ongoing discussions within the European Union about how it should position itself if formal peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow eventually take shape.
While some European leaders have called for the EU to prepare a structured diplomatic mandate for possible negotiations, others remain divided over the timing and scope of any future engagement.
Costa’s remarks underscore the EU’s current strategic stance of backing Ukraine while leaving broader diplomatic mediation efforts to other international actors or future arrangements.
