Mozambique Says Two Citizens Killed in South Africa

MAPUTO — Mozambique has confirmed that two of its citizens were killed in South Africa amid a new wave of anti-migrant unrest, where groups have carried out door-to-door searches in some communities demanding that foreign nationals leave the country.

Mozambican authorities said the deaths occurred as tensions increased during protests and confrontations targeting migrants from neighboring African countries. The unrest has raised concerns across the region over the safety of foreign nationals living and working in South Africa.

In some areas, groups of protesters have gone from house to house, attempting to identify and remove people they believe are undocumented immigrants. Reports said some migrants have fled their homes because of fears of violence and intimidation.

The latest incidents have sparked renewed criticism of xenophobia, with regional governments calling for the protection of migrants and peaceful solutions to challenges such as unemployment, poverty, and economic hardship. South African authorities have faced pressure to prevent vigilante actions while addressing public concerns about jobs and services.

Mozambique joins other African countries that have raised concerns about the safety of their citizens in South Africa amid the unrest. The developments have also led some governments to organize voluntary repatriation programs for citizens who no longer feel safe remaining in affected areas.
