MADRID – Spain has confirmed its 2026 visa policy allowing citizens of eight African countries to enter Spain and other Schengen Area countries without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days, provided they hold ordinary passports.
The visa-free arrangement applies to nationals of Botswana, Namibia, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mauritius, Seychelles, Cape Verde, and Rwanda. Eligible travelers will be able to visit Spain and other Schengen countries for tourism, business, family visits, and other short-term purposes without applying for a Schengen visa before travel.
The policy is part of the European Union’s broader visa exemption framework, which grants visa-free access to selected countries that meet requirements related to security, migration cooperation, and diplomatic agreements with the EU.
Travelers benefiting from the exemption must still comply with Schengen entry requirements, including having a valid passport, proof of accommodation or travel plans when requested, sufficient financial means, and meeting border control conditions.
However, citizens of most other African countries will continue to require a Schengen visa before traveling to Spain or other Schengen member states. Applicants from those countries must submit visa applications through Spanish embassies, consulates, or authorized visa centers.
The continued difference in visa access between African countries has been a subject of discussion among policymakers and travelers, with many calling for greater mobility and easier movement between Africa and Europe.
Spain remains one of the most popular European destinations for African travelers due to its geographic proximity, historical ties with parts of Africa, and strong tourism sector. The 2026 visa policy is expected to increase travel opportunities for citizens of the countries included in the exemption list while maintaining existing border and security requirements.
The Schengen Area currently allows movement across participating European countries with a single visa system, meaning travelers who qualify for visa-free entry to Spain can also visit other Schengen destinations during their permitted 90-day stay.
