Somalia to Recruit 4,000 New Teachers as Government Expands Education Sector

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Federal Government of Somalia has announced plans to recruit 4,000 new teachers as part of its efforts to expand and strengthen the country’s education system.

The planned recruitment will build on previous government efforts that have already seen 6,000 teachers recruited, bringing the total number of teachers under the program to 10,000 once the new recruitment is completed.

The initiative is aimed at addressing teacher shortages, expanding access to education and improving the quality of teaching in schools across Somalia.

The government is also seeking to increase the number of teachers working in primary and secondary schools, particularly in areas where access to education remains limited.

The recruitment plan comes as education continues to be identified as a key priority in Somalia’s national development agenda. Officials say increasing the number of qualified teachers is essential to improving learning outcomes and providing more children with access to formal education.

The 2026 budget plan includes provisions to support the expansion of the teaching workforce and the delivery of education services across the country.

Further details on the recruitment process, including eligibility requirements, selection procedures and teacher deployment, are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Education.

The government says the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to building a stronger and more accessible education system for Somali children.
