Sudan Accuses Ethiopia of Allowing Drone Launches Against Its Territory, Warns of Regional Security Risks

0

KHARTOUM, Sudan — Sudan has accused Ethiopia of allowing its territory to be used as a launchpad for drones allegedly involved in recent attacks against Sudan, warning that the reported developments could threaten regional security and stability.

Muawiya Osman Khalid, Undersecretary at Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the allegations during a seminar organized by the Sudan News Agency (SUNA) in Khartoum. The event focused on claims of Ethiopian support for Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“Ethiopia has not been deterred and has continued its aggression against Sudan,” Khalid said, according to SUNA.

The senior official described the alleged drone launches as a dangerous development and said Sudan reserved the right to defend itself while keeping the international community informed about the situation.

He also called on international justice institutions to take action to stop what Sudan considers aggression against its territory.

Sudan Raises Concerns Over Alleged Drone Attacks

Khalid’s remarks followed reported drone attacks on Wednesday that targeted six electricity stations across Khartoum, Al-Jazira, Sennar and Al-Qadarif states.

The attacks have raised concerns about the security of Sudan’s critical infrastructure and the potential impact on electricity supplies and civilian life.

The Sudanese government has accused Ethiopia of supporting the RSF and permitting drones to be launched from Ethiopian territory. Ethiopia has denied the allegations, maintaining that it respects Sudan’s sovereignty.

The claims have not been independently verified.

Khartoum Distinguishes Between Ethiopian Government and People

Despite the accusations, Khalid emphasized that Sudan maintained positive relations with the Ethiopian people, distinguishing them from the policies of the Ethiopian government.

He accused the Ethiopian authorities of continuing drone attacks against Sudanese civilians, while insisting that Sudanese state institutions remained capable of protecting the country.

Khalid said Khartoum would continue pursuing diplomatic and international avenues to communicate its concerns and defend its national interests.

Sudan’s War Continues to Fuel Regional Instability

Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF since April 2023. The fighting erupted following disagreements over the integration of the paramilitary force into the regular military.

The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, displaced nearly 13 million people and intensified food insecurity, famine risks and humanitarian suffering across the country, according to United Nations and international estimates.

The latest allegations against Ethiopia could further strain relations between the two neighboring countries, particularly if tensions over cross-border security and alleged military support to armed groups continue to escalate.

The situation remains tense, with further clarification and independent verification needed regarding the alleged use of Ethiopian territory for drone operations against Sudan.
