BAHIR DAR — Global aerospace giant Boeing has expanded its collaboration with Ethiopian higher education institutions by signing a long-term partnership agreement with Bahir Dar University to establish an Aviation Innovation Center, further strengthening efforts to support aviation education, research, and workforce development in Ethiopia.
According to a statement released by Bahir Dar University, the agreement was signed on 08 July 2026 and is designed to contribute to the growth of Africa’s rapidly expanding aviation sector by enhancing aerospace engineering education, promoting innovation-driven research, and preparing a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting future industry demands.
The partnership will focus on developing academic programs, supporting research initiatives, fostering technological innovation, and creating opportunities for students and faculty members to engage with global aviation and aerospace developments. The planned Aviation Innovation Center is expected to serve as a hub for advanced learning, industry collaboration, and practical training in aviation-related disciplines.
The agreement comes only weeks after Boeing announced a similar strategic partnership with Jimma University, aimed at strengthening aviation sciences and aerospace engineering education. Together, the two initiatives signal Boeing’s growing commitment to supporting higher education institutions in Ethiopia and investing in the next generation of African aviation professionals.
University officials described the partnership as an important step toward positioning Ethiopia as a regional center for aviation education and technological innovation. The collaboration is also expected to help bridge the gap between academic training and industry requirements by providing students with greater exposure to real-world aerospace challenges and emerging technologies.
As Africa’s aviation industry continues to expand, demand for engineers, aviation specialists, researchers, and technical professionals is expected to increase significantly. Boeing’s partnerships with Ethiopian universities are intended to help address these workforce needs while encouraging local innovation and research that can contribute to the continent’s long-term aviation development.
The initiative further reflects the growing role of Ethiopian institutions in global aerospace collaboration and highlights increasing international interest in supporting Africa’s aviation and technology sectors through education, research, and capacity-building programs.
