KINSHASA — The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported a sharp rise in Ebola infections, with confirmed cases reaching 2,181 and the death toll climbing to 864, according to official figures released Friday.
Health authorities said the outbreak continues to pose a major threat to public health, as the virus spreads across multiple regions of the country despite ongoing containment efforts.
Officials warned that the response has been complicated by insecurity in several affected areas, population movements, and difficulties in tracing individuals who may have been exposed to infected patients. These challenges have hindered efforts to quickly identify and isolate new cases, increasing the risk of further transmission.
“The outbreak remains a serious concern, and rapid detection and reporting of suspected cases are essential to limiting its spread,” health officials said in a statement.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said the current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, a less common variant for which no fully approved vaccine or specific treatment currently exists. Researchers and international health agencies are continuing clinical trials aimed at developing effective vaccines and therapies.
Ebola is a highly infectious viral disease that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials. Symptoms can include fever, severe weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and, in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
The Congolese government, working alongside the WHO and other international partners, has intensified surveillance, laboratory testing, contact tracing, and community awareness campaigns in an effort to contain the outbreak.
Authorities have urged residents to immediately report suspected cases and follow public health guidelines, warning that community cooperation will be critical to preventing further infections and deaths.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past decades, making it one of the countries most frequently affected by the deadly disease. Health experts say sustained vigilance and international support will be essential to bringing the latest outbreak under control.
