KHARTOUM — The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, met with Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, during an official visit to Khartoum aimed at advancing regional efforts to support peace and stability in Sudan.
The meeting focused on IGAD’s continued engagement with Sudan as the regional bloc seeks to promote dialogue, stability, and national recovery amid the country’s ongoing conflict.
According to IGAD, the discussions reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Sudan through sustained political dialogue, regional solidarity, and close cooperation with the Sudanese government and people.
Dr. Workneh emphasized the importance of coordinated regional action to help address the country’s political, security, and humanitarian challenges, while reiterating IGAD’s readiness to work with Sudan and international partners in pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The visit forms part of IGAD’s broader diplomatic engagement with Sudan as fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to fuel one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
IGAD has consistently called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, inclusive political dialogue, and greater regional cooperation to support Sudan’s transition toward lasting peace, stability, and recovery.
