KAMPALA — Somalia’s Minister of Internal Security, Gen. Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail (Fartaag), on Thursday participated in a meeting of defence ministers from countries contributing troops to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), held in Kampala, Uganda.
The high-level meeting brought together representatives from troop-contributing countries to review Somalia’s security situation, assess the progress of the AUSSOM mission, and discuss ways to strengthen regional cooperation in support of Somalia’s peace and stabilization efforts.
Participants also examined measures to enhance coordination among troop-contributing countries and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to combat terrorism, strengthen national security institutions, and achieve lasting peace and stability.
The discussions come ahead of the Second AUSSOM Troop-Contributing Countries Summit, which is expected to focus on the future of the African Union-led mission, operational priorities, force generation, and sustainable financing for security operations in Somalia.
Minister Fartaag was accompanied by Somalia’s State Minister for Defence, Omar Ali, and Somalia’s Ambassador to Uganda, Fardowsa Mohamed Qanyare Afrax.
AUSSOM, which succeeded the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in January 2025, continues to support Somali security forces through joint operations, capacity building, and efforts aimed at degrading the threat posed by al-Shabaab while helping create conditions for long-term peace and stability.
