Kagame urges Africans to elect visionary leaders

KIGALI — Rwandan President Paul Kagame has urged Africans to prioritise leaders with clear development visions, warning that poor leadership choices inevitably lead to poor outcomes.

“Bad outcomes come from bad ideas,” Kagame said during a public function on Rwanda’s history held in the capital Kigali on Friday, according to his remarks.

Kagame used the occasion to reflect on Rwanda’s historical challenges and its post-genocide reconstruction, highlighting the importance of long-term planning, disciplined governance and institutional stability in national development.

He called on African citizens to take greater responsibility in shaping their countries’ futures by electing leaders who focus on practical solutions rather than rhetoric, stressing that sustainable progress depends on sound ideas and consistent policy direction.

The Rwandan leader’s comments were broadly interpreted as a wider message on governance across Africa, where several countries continue to face economic hardship, political instability and development gaps.

Rwanda has frequently pointed to its own development path as evidence of the benefits of strong central planning and governance reforms since the 1994 genocide, including improvements in infrastructure, public services and economic growth indicators.

However, Kagame’s administration has also faced criticism from international rights organisations over restrictions on political space and concerns regarding freedom of expression and opposition activity.

His remarks come at a time of ongoing continental debate about leadership accountability, democratic governance and development strategies, as African countries seek to address poverty, unemployment and institutional challenges.

The Kigali event formed part of a series of commemorative discussions on Rwanda’s history and development trajectory, which officials say are aimed at reinforcing national unity and reflecting on the country’s transformation over the past three decades.
