MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud joined hundreds of people in central Mogadishu on Wednesday night as crowds gathered to celebrate the country’s Independence Day, marking the anniversary of Somalia’s unification in 1960.

The president mingled with residents at the Taleex Junction, one of the capital’s busiest intersections, where Somali flags, patriotic songs and cultural performances marked the national holiday. Members of the Independence Week organizing committee also took part in the celebrations alongside members of the public.

July 1 commemorates the union of the former Italian-administered south and the former British Somaliland Protectorate in 1960, creating the Somali Republic. The date remains one of the country’s most significant national holidays, symbolizing independence, unity and statehood.

The celebrations followed a week of official events across Mogadishu, including flag-raising ceremonies, tributes to Somalia’s independence heroes and public gatherings organized by the federal government to commemorate Independence Week.

Large numbers of residents turned out in the capital, with many waving the blue Somali flag and singing national songs as security forces maintained a visible but orderly presence around the festivities.

The president’s decision to celebrate among members of the public was seen by supporters as a demonstration of growing public confidence and the government’s efforts to project improved security in Mogadishu, a city that has faced decades of conflict and periodic attacks by the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab. While security challenges remain, authorities have sought to highlight increased public participation in national events.

Somalia has marked Independence Week with renewed calls for national unity, reconciliation and continued efforts to strengthen state institutions as the country pursues security and political reforms.
