Pakistan says it mediated US–Iran electronic MoU deal

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan said Thursday it had facilitated what it described as a breakthrough agreement between the United States and Iran, with both sides reportedly signing an electronic memorandum of understanding aimed at de-escalating tensions and restoring stability in the Gulf region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the deal, mediated through Islamabad, outlines a phased framework that includes the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the gradual easing of US sanctions on Iran.

He said the agreement followed “intensive diplomatic engagement” involving several regional actors, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Egypt.

Neither Washington nor Tehran has officially confirmed the full details of the reported accord, though diplomatic sources and regional media suggest the framework also includes a temporary cessation of hostilities and guarantees for safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.

US political figures, including Donald Trump and senior advisers, were reportedly involved in the negotiations, while Iranian representation was said to be led by President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The deal has been described by participating sides as a confidence-building step toward wider negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and long-term sanctions relief.

Analysts, however, caution that the agreement remains fragile, with key implementation details still unclear, including timelines for sanctions relief and maritime security arrangements.

If implemented, the accord would mark one of the most significant diplomatic breakthroughs in recent years, easing tensions in a region frequently disrupted by security crises and threats to global energy flows.
