Somalia and Ethiopia Leaders Hold Talks on Security and Regional Cooperation

ADDIS ABABA — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed held talks on Monday focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation on security, economic development and regional stability in the Horn of Africa, according to official statements.

The Somali presidency said the discussions centred on “historic relations” between the two neighbouring countries and explored ways to enhance coordination on counterterrorism, border security and economic integration.

President Hassan Sheikh, who is on a working visit to Ethiopia, congratulated Prime Minister Abiy on recent electoral developments in the country and expressed support for continued efforts toward stability and development, according to the Somali side.

Both leaders reportedly discussed the importance of regional cooperation in addressing shared security challenges, including militant groups operating across porous borders in the Horn of Africa.

The talks also touched on economic ties, including trade, infrastructure development and connectivity projects aimed at improving commercial links between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Ethiopia, a key regional power, has played a central role in security operations in Somalia for years, while Mogadishu has increasingly sought to recalibrate its foreign relations as it strengthens state institutions and security forces.

The meeting comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between the two countries following periods of tension over regional security arrangements and access to the sea.

Officials from both sides described the talks as “constructive,” though no formal agreements were immediately announced.

Further details are expected following a joint communiqué at the conclusion of the visit.
