NAIROBI — Somalia’s National Communications Authority on Sunday convened the first meeting of a technical working group on submarine cable landing infrastructure, bringing together telecom operators, internet service providers and international partners.

The two-day workshop, organised in cooperation with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), aims to strengthen coordination among stakeholders and improve the resilience of Somalia’s undersea fibre-optic cable systems.

According to the regulator, discussions will focus on cable fault management, market competition, infrastructure development and the regulatory framework governing submarine cable operations in the country.

Participants are also reviewing findings from a recent telecommunications market assessment to identify priorities for future sector development.

Opening the meeting, National Communications Authority Director General Mustafa Yasin Sheikh stressed the importance of cooperation in building reliable digital infrastructure.

“Submarine cables are the backbone of our digital connectivity and play a key role in economic growth, innovation and access to essential services,” he said.

He added that the technical group would strengthen collaboration between regulators and industry stakeholders to develop more resilient communications infrastructure.
