MOGADISHU — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has called on newly graduated military officers to become defenders of the Somali state, urging them to protect the country through constitutional institutions and a professional national army rather than through individual power or uncontrolled armed groups.
The President delivered the message during the graduation ceremony of the eighth batch of cadets from the Turksom Military Academy in Mogadishu, where young officers completed their military training and prepared to serve in Somalia’s national security forces.
Addressing the graduates, President Hassan Sheikh emphasized that the responsibility of a soldier goes beyond carrying weapons. He said true national security is achieved through discipline, loyalty to the Constitution, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to protecting the Somali people.
He warned the new officers against being drawn into conflicts, political disputes, or actions that could create instability and suffering among citizens. The President encouraged them to reject any calls for violence and bloodshed, reminding them that the army’s mission is to preserve peace, defend national sovereignty, and support the stability of the country.
“The strength of a nation is not measured by the number of weapons in private hands, but by the strength, professionalism, and discipline of its state institutions,” the President said, stressing the importance of building a unified Somali security sector that serves the interests of all citizens.
President Hassan Sheikh also highlighted the importance of loyalty and integrity among military personnel, saying that Somalia needs officers who place national interests above personal, political, or clan-based interests. He urged the graduates to be examples of responsibility, courage, and respect for human rights as they begin their military careers.
The President said that strong security institutions are the foundation of Somalia’s future, helping the country overcome years of instability and creating conditions for economic development, political progress, and lasting peace.
The graduation of the new officers marks another step in Somalia’s efforts to rebuild its national army and improve the capabilities of its security forces. Through military education and leadership training, the government aims to develop a modern, disciplined force capable of protecting Somalia’s territory, supporting national stability, and ensuring the safety of its people.
The President concluded by reminding the officers that they are servants of the Somali nation and that their greatest duty is to protect the Constitution, defend citizens, and contribute to a peaceful and united Somalia.
