South Sudan to Hold First Election on Dec 22, 2026 Amid Political Tensions

JUBA — South Sudan has announced that it will hold its first general election since independence on December 22, 2026, after years of repeated delays caused by conflict and political instability.

The vote comes amid ongoing tensions between President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar, who is currently under house arrest and facing treason charges. It remains unclear whether he will be allowed to contest the election.

While electoral authorities say preparations are underway, opposition groups warn that unresolved political and security issues could affect the credibility of the process.

Despite a 2018 peace agreement, fighting continues in parts of the country. The United Nations says the deal is under strain and warns that the humanitarian situation is worsening, while international partners are calling for renewed peace efforts and inclusive dialogue.
