UROR COUNTY – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) has claimed that its forces captured Pieri Payam in Uror County following heavy fighting on Sunday.
SPLM-IO spokesperson Pal Mai Deng said the group’s Sector Three command carried out the operation, alleging that government forces suffered significant casualties during the clashes.
He added that a detailed military briefing is expected from SPLA-IO army spokesperson Colonel Lam Paul Gabriel in the coming hours.
The reported fighting marks the latest escalation in localized clashes between SPLA-IO forces and the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) in Jonglei State, an area that has experienced recurring insecurity despite ongoing peace arrangements.
As of publication, the SSPDF has not issued an official response to the claims or confirmed whether Pieri Payam has fallen under SPLM-IO control.
Independent verification of battlefield claims from both sides remains difficult, and casualty figures could not be confirmed.
