Ayari, who was born in Sweden, has Tunisian and Moroccan roots through his parents. His goal came in a tightly contested match, but instead of celebrating, he raised his hands and appeared to gesture in a subdued manner, in what observers described as a sign of respect toward his family background.

The 21-year-old midfielder has previously been eligible to represent Tunisia through his father, with reports indicating that Tunisian football authorities had shown interest in securing his international commitment before he opted to play for Sweden at senior level.

Despite scoring on football’s biggest stage against the North African side, Ayari refrained from any visible celebration, prompting widespread discussion on social media about identity, loyalty, and the emotional complexity faced by dual-nationality players.

Ayari has not publicly commented in detail on the gesture, but teammates described him as “emotionally affected” after the goal.

The moment added to a growing list of instances in international football where players with mixed heritage have faced emotionally charged situations when competing against the countries of their ancestry.

Sweden went on to continue their campaign in the tournament, while Tunisia’s hopes suffered a setback in the group stage.

The incident has been widely shared online, with many fans describing Ayari’s reaction as a sign of respect and personal reflection rather than celebration.
