DJIBOUTI CITY — Djibouti marked its 49th Independence Day on Saturday with a military parade showcasing the country’s armed forces, as President Ismail Omar Guelleh led national celebrations in the capital, Djibouti City.

The parade, held on the grounds behind Camp Cheik Osman, brought together contingents from the national army and other security services. Senior government officials, military commanders, foreign diplomats and members of the public attended the event.

Troops marched in formation and displayed military equipment, highlighting the country’s focus on defense readiness and security in the Horn of Africa.

During the ceremony, authorities announced the creation of a new elite paracommando unit of around 160 personnel, aimed at strengthening special operations capabilities within the armed forces.
Djibouti, which gained independence from France on 27 June 1977, traditionally marks its national day with military parades and official ceremonies reflecting its emphasis on stability and security.
